Kids Advent Calendar: Day 3
This is the third day in my new kids advent calendar, An Experiment to Remember! We're using Christmas science activities to teach about Jesus!
Kids Advent Calendar
Lesson 3: Small Things
Supplies:
* water bottle or tall flask
* food coloring
* 2 Tablespoons warm water
* 1 teaspoons yeast
* squirt of liquid dish soap
* 1/2 cup 6% hydrogen peroxide (20 volume CLEAR developer)
* pan to catch everything in
Step by Step Experiment:
1- Mix the yeast and water and set them aside.
2- Pour the hydrogen peroxide, food coloring, and soap into the empty flask or water bottle.
3- Put the bottle in the pan.
4- Add the yeast/water to the flask/bottle and step back!
The Life of Jesus:
"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them...and said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy...For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord." -Luke 2:8-11
Shepherds may seem small, but they spread the news of Christ's birth everywhere! Yeast is a small ingredient in this experiment that also makes a big difference!
What "small" things can you do?
Science Explanation:
Hydrogen peroxide naturally separates into oxygen and hydrogen. The growing yeast is a catalyst that speeds this reaction up...a lot! The soap foams as oxygen blows through it and the food coloring looks cool.
This is the lesson for Day 3 (of 25) in An Experiment to Remember, a kids advent calendar that uses science object lessons to discuss the life and teachings of Jesus.
