Kids Advent Calendar: Day 10
This is the seventh day in my new kids advent calendar, An Experiment to Remember! We're using Christmas science activities to teach about Jesus!
Kids Advent Calendar
Lesson 10: Be a Light
Supplies:
* candle & lighter
* mason jar
* mason jar
Step by Step Experiment:
1- Light the candle and ask your kids what will happen if you cover it up.
2- Cover it with the jar and watch the flame burn out.
2- Cover it with the jar and watch the flame burn out.
The Life of Jesus:
"Ye are the light of the world...Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." -Matthew 5:14-16
Jesus taught that we should be a light for other people, and that we should not "cover" our lights.
How can you be a light to the world?
How can you be a light to the world?
Science Explanation:
Molecules in the vaporized candle wax react with oxygen in the air, creating more heat that melts more wax that vaporizes and continues the cycle. The jar prevents new oxygen from reaching the candle. Once all the available oxygen is "burned" up, no more heat is generated, and the candle burns out.
This is the lesson for Day 10 (of 25) in An Experiment to Remember, a kids advent calendar that uses science object lessons to discuss the life and teachings of Jesus.
